A complete business,
in a trailer.

Apex Asphalt has spent fifteen years running small surfacing contracts for homeowners, municipalities and government. We have packed that whole business into a towable kit — and we are looking for the people to run it.

We already run this business. Now we are handing over the keys.

Apex Asphalt has been trading for fifteen years with two successful branch operations, and was selected as one of the top 300 black empowerment companies in South Africa.

We took years of experience running smaller contracts in the domestic market and applied that concept to government, parastatal and metropolitan work. Because we are owner-driven, we are more flexible and more cost-effective than the large nationals. Paired with our marketing programme on the domestic side, it makes for a durable business.

The market is far too big for one national company to service. Franchising breaks it into pieces that can actually be covered. Every franchisee gets a raw material supplier and a support base near their own patch, so their effort goes into marketing and servicing the work in front of them.

We intend to have roughly fifty franchisees running in every major area of the country within five years, most of them BEE, each with a training and back-up base in their nearest centre.

There is more broken tar in South Africa than anyone can fix.

0

of asphalt belongs to South African homeowners. Much of it needs repair, resurfacing or replacement.

Each block is one million square metres.

Drive through any suburb and the evidence is on the ground: potholes, surface cracks, general decay. A newly surfaced driveway is the exception, not the rule.

Why homeowners leave it

  • They do not have the technical information.
  • They assume a driveway lasts forever.
  • There is no real DIY maintenance product on the shelf.
  • Contractors will only quote a full asphalt overlay, which prices the job out of reach.
  • Decay is gradual, so nobody notices. What did it look like two years ago?

Domestic work

Driveways, parking areas, private roads and complexes. This is the volume market, and it is reached by work-face marketing rather than tenders. Our established methods produce a high hit rate, and satisfied customers keep the momentum going by word of mouth.

National, provincial and municipal work

There is a long backlog of suburban road maintenance across the country. It is now being addressed at national, provincial and municipal level, and policy is to outsource the smaller contracts and award them to BEE contractors. Apex has extensive experience running exactly this kind of contract, in line with the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act.

Questions people ask before they commit

How hard is it to actually run?
Easier than most people expect, because almost nothing is left for you to invent. You get a complete business in a trailer supplying an asphalting and related service to the provincial and domestic market. There are no expensive premises to find and rent — you operate from home.
Have these methods been tested, or am I the experiment?
Pilot operations are already established and trading. Through them we have worked out the business methods and procedures for every part of running a small contracts company, and those are what get handed to you.
What training do I get?
All of it — technical, sales and administrative — for you and for your senior staff. Mentoring then continues on an ongoing basis rather than stopping once you open.
Can you help me raise the finance?
Yes. Finance may be arranged for qualifying applicants, and we can assist you in raising what you need.
Do I have to build a brand from scratch?
No. Marketing methods, stationery, signboards, vehicle decals, staff dress and the franchisee logo are all standardised, so every Apex operation reads as part of the same company.
Where will the work come from?
Two directions at once. On the domestic side, our marketing methods produce a high hit rate, and satisfied customers generate ongoing work by word of mouth. On the public side, national, provincial and municipal bodies are outsourcing smaller maintenance contracts and awarding them to BEE contractors — work Apex has extensive experience running.
What is not included in the price?
A compactor or roller, which you hire or buy as jobs require. You also need a long-wheelbase pick-up truck and R40,000 in working capital of your own.
